The Late Show With David Letterman‘s last show will air on May 20th, after a 33-year run. Stephen Colbert will take over the talk show duties, and his first show is expected to broadcast on September 8th. The CBS network recently announced some of the artists on the lineup for the remaining Late Show dates. Dave Matthews Band, Elvis Costello, Mumford and Sons, Norah Jones, the Avett Brothers, Tom Waits, Emmylou Harris, Brandi Carlie, Iron & Wine, Ben Bridwell, Ralph Stanley, Amos Lee, Tracy Chapman, Asleep at the Wheel, and Chris Stapleton were all named as musical guests for the final Letterman shows.
The network stated more artists will be named at a later date. Besides the musical acts, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Roberts, John Travolta, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson are some of the celebrities scheduled to say their final goodbyes to the late night talk show legend.
David Letterman made his talk show debut in 1982, which was broadcast on NBC at the time. Since its inception, Letterman has become the “King” of late night television, and he has earned over twenty Emmy Awards nominations for his work. Some of his Emmy Awards wins include the award for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Series, for which Letterman has won six times. The Late Show with David Letterman continued to be one of the top-rated late night shows on television, including an episode in the 1990s that brought in a whooping 15 million viewers. Some of Letterman’s most legendary guests include Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, and Sandra Bernhard.
Another change on the late night talk show circuit took place last month. On March 23rd, James Corden replaced host Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show. Although Ferguson had the longest tenure as the host of the show, he left The Late Late Show in December of last year. Corden may have been relatively unknown in the US, but it seems the talk show host is slowly becoming a household name in the US. Tom Hanks has already made an appearance on the show, and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl has performed on the show as well.
