To Pimp a Butterfly will feature sixteen tracks, although the only song listed so far is “The Blacker the Berry.” “The Blacker the Berry” has been called a modern day Public Enemy record, which promotes being “black and proud.” The record is intended to bring awareness to issues in the black community in regards to police brutality. Most fans expect Lamar to include “i” on the project as well, considering the song won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.

Kendrick Lamar recently spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about To Pimp a Butterfly. The rapper revealed the title pays homage to Harper Lee‘s To Kill a Mockingbird novel. “Just putting the word pimp next to butterfly, it is a trip. That’s something that will be a phrase forever. It’ll be taught in college courses, I truly believe that,” Lamar boldly stated to Rolling Stone magazine. The rapper told the magazine that the album was inspired by Miles Davis and 1970s funk. The sophomore project is expected to include production from Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, and the Digi+Phonics team consisting of Sounwave, Tae Beast, Willie B, and Dave Free. Lamar stated in a radio interview that he doesn’t work outside of his usual production crew, and so fans shouldn’t expect any production for anyone the rapper hasn’t worked with in the past.

The rapper’s first major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city entered the Billboard 200 at Number 2, and it has sold over one million copies to date. The platinum certified album produced five successful singles including “The Recipe” featuring Dr. Dre, “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Backseat Freestyle,” “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake, and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” featuring Jay-Z.
