From modeling for American Apparel to working with Kanye West, 21-year-old Kacy Hill’s life has been rather exciting. After touring with West as a background dancer on his 2013 Yeezus Tour, she was signed to his GOOD Music record label last year. Hill had only recorded one song, “Experience,” before she was signed. Fast forward to present day, and she has now released her first EP, titled Bloo. Although it’s rather short (three of the five songs are remixes), Bloo proves that Kacy Hill is a rising star.

“Foreign Fields” is the lead single, and it also opens the EP. When I first heard this song, I immediately got some James Blake-esque vibes. Hill’s light vocals float over the Jack Garratt-produced, futuristic-sounding beat. Her voice works perfectly on this track, making it an early favorite. The tempo changes with “Arm’s Length,” a more modern, pop-sounding song about a partner who isn’t giving a relationship their all. I write pop-sounding because it is definitely more than just your average pop song. Yes, it’s catchy and pop-like, but it is also sophisticated and mature. Although parts of the song feel a little empty to me, “Arm’s Length” is a feel good song that I will surely be playing often. The mood slows a bit with “Shades of Blue,” which is yet another winner. This song features a beautiful hook that happens to me my favorite on the project. This song is both naturally relaxing and powerful, making for a great listening experience.

The EP ends with remixes of “Foreign Fields” and “Arm’s Length.” Producer Yung Gud works magic on “Foreign Fields (Yung Gud Remix).” He moves Hill’s vocals to the background and brings a newly constructed beat to life. He incorporates sounds of the ocean and seagulls that work really well on the track. This remix is an excellent rework of the song and is absolutely worthy of finding a home on this project. “Arm’s Length (Bodhi Remix)” is less necessary, but I still think that its place on the EP works rather well. Although Bodhi incorporates little of Hill’s vocals into the remix, the song works as an upbeat, dancing victory lap for Kacy.
