The Billboard Latin Music Awards honored the memory of late Tejano sensation Selena Quintanilla-Perez with a performance by Jennifer Lopez at their April 30 show. Joined onstage by Los Dinos (a band comprised of Selena’s siblings Suzette and A.B. Quintanilla and her widow Chris Perez), Lopez worked her way through a tribute with energy and visual emotion. The performance honored several of Selena’s biggest hits, including “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Amor Prohibido,” “I Could Fall In Love,” and “No Me Queda Mas.”

Lopez was visually emotional during her performance, urging fans to sing along to the classic hits. As Lopez worked her way across the stage, she executed several onstage costume changes and went out of her way to pay tribute to the superstar musician. As the performance came to an end, Lopez embraced Los Dinos before proclaiming “we love you Selena.”

This is not the first time that Jennifer Lopez has channeled Selena for a performance. The “Feel The Light” songstress played Selena as the leading role in the 1997 biopic about the Tejano songstress, aptly titled Selena. Although the casting of the New York born Lopez was met with dissent, Jennifer Lopez’s work with the film was critically acclaimed. The performance has been heralded as her breakthrough role, leading to the beginning of Jennifer Lopez’s lengthy career in both film and music.

After portraying the musician in Selena, Lopez has developed strong feelings for the young Tejano singer. “People like her don’t come along every day,” Lopez stated earlier this year. “I felt she had a sense to live in the moment, that you’re not promised tomorrow,” she explained before adding that Selena is still affected Lopez’s life. “For me that was the biggest lesson. That affected me in my life far more profoundly than the movie did in career terms.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Selena’s tragic murder at the hands of Yolanda Saldivar. Before her death Selena was responsible for popularizing Tejano music and was referred to by many as the Queen of Tejano. She was the best selling Latin artist of the 1990s, and her legacy still lives on to this day. It was recently announced that Selena’s family is in the process of creating a holographic version of the songstress to perform and bring Selena’s music to a new age of fans.
