Iron Maiden’s drummer, Nicko McBrain, announced in an interview this morning that the band has finished a new studio album. This will be the band’s sixteenth studio album and serves as the follow-up to their 2010 album The Final Frontier. The band is hesitant to give a release until during singer Bruce Dickinson’s current battle with cancer. He indicated it could come out in the next few months; the band is waiting to see how Dickinson’s health holds up during his treatment. McBrain said the band is planning to “go out and do some work around the new album,” given the state of their singer’s health, no touring of the scale they have been known for in the past. After the release of The Final Frontier, the band hit major festivals and saw a long-awaited return to the US.
McBrain went on to say that the band was blown away by the news of Dickinson’s cancer when a tumor was found on the back of his tongue, but “he is in good hands back in England, with both his family and the oncologists.” He said the announcement, in regards to his health, was not made until after he had already finished treatment. Despite the brutal chemo sessions, the singer stayed positive. He confirmed that though a full recovery could take another three months, Dickinson is already venturing back out, going into their offices last week and even taking a trip to the pub. McBrain was told that even though Dickinson could not taste the beer, he said he could still feel it doing its job.
Dickinson might not have been the band’s only singer as he stepped in to replace Paul Di’Anno in 1981 and had his position filled by Blaze Bayley. Dickinson is their most popular singer and lent his talents to all of the band’s platinum albums including Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, which contains the song, “The Trooper,“ that gained radio air-play in US. The band throughout its career sold more albums by virtue of their live shows than catering to radio or MTV.
