Immersed in Njena Reddd Foxxx: Watercolour

Njena Reddd Foxxx, a.k.a. Njena Surae Jarvis, first fell directly into the public eye following a collaboration on Zebra Katz’s editorial ‘Ima Read’, a track with an infectious hook and edgy video (watch here) that first blew up after fashion designer Rick Owens played it during his Fall/Winter 2012 show in Paris. In a similar fashion (get it?), Watercolour is featured in a short film showcasing designer Kitty Joseph’s three piece collection inspired by Absolut Vodka’s limited edition ‘Cobalt Collection’. Njena sways and bends to a clip of her own track, illustrating the three looks- drop, flow, and settle.

Njena’s delivery swirls over a laid back vocal beat (courtesy of London-based producer Jepordise) in Watercolour, propelling a fluid style that reflects the track’s name. Her flow effortlessly pulls and pushes the beat, evoking lyricism “abstract and wild” to describe the hardships of weathering a relationship worn thin by distance. Waterclour highlights an unhurried form that contrasts with a menacing style and dark humour on tracks like ‘Silly Bitch’ and ‘Dominoes’.

Njena’s credentials extend far beyond hip-hop- the Brooklyn native is a former student of the Cooper Union, one of America’s most revered and selective design institutions. A background in design is reflected in her visuals, and accredits each songs’ success in fashion circles, allowing the female MC a seamless balance between artistic expression and a believable bravado- a rare feat in hip-hop.

While Njena has yet to sign with a label, her debut EP with producer Jepordise, Needful Things, was released last December. You can find it on her soundcloud, along with a sampling of earlier solo singles such as ‘Dominos’ and ‘Hold My Purse’. Jarvis will release her anticipated full-length mixtape The Wiz, inspired by the music featured in the 1978 feature film The Wiz, later this year.
