Idina Menzel and John Legend will perform at the Super Bowl XLIX pregame festivities. Menzel will perform the National Anthem, and Legend will perform “America the Beautiful” at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The pregame festivities and the Super Bowl will air on NBC. Menzel will follow in the footsteps of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé. Menzel tweeted, “It was 1991 and I remember it well: Whitney sings the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Almost as glorious as her voice was her huge radiant smile. I am so humbled and honored to be asked this year.” Legend has had a busy, yet successful week. He won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for “Glory,” a collaborative effort with Common. Legend was just nominated for an Academy Award for “Glory” as well.

As previously reported, Katy Perry will perform during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX. During an interview, Perry said her female empowerment songs make her the ideal entertainer for the halftime show, due to the domestic violence controversy that was highly publicized this NFL season. “I’m all about female empowerment and uplifting people’s spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework,’ so maybe there is no better person.” Perry continued, “Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance.” The singer has not released too many details in regards to her performance. The pop singer did say her twelve minute performance will include a mash-up of her hit songs, and she will make multiple costume changes. Rocker Lenny Kravitz will be Perry’s special guest performer. Perry did not state if any performers will join her on stage besides Kravitz.

The pop artist addressed whether the NFL asked her to pay for her halftime show performance, “I put my foot down very early in the courtship. I said, ‘Look guys, here’s where I draw a line in the sand.'” Perry said she is not going to risk the biggest moment in her career by doing anything deemed offensive. She says she wants everyone to talk about “the music and nothing else.” Katy Perry promised to be entertaining, humorous, and electrifying during her performance.
