Deesha Dyer, a former hip-hop journalist, is now the White House Social Secretary. Dyer will oversee the planning of several White House events, which include numerous ceremonies and receptions. “I am constantly inspired by the openness, diversity, and traditions of this Administration,” Dyer told the Associated Press. The 37-year old secretary received high praise from the First Lady Michelle Obama. The First Lady said Dyer was passionate, creative, and had relentless competence. “Whether helping flawlessly execute state dinners or going the extra mile to open the White House to people who never dreamed they would walk through these doors, Deesha has worked tirelessly to truly make the White House the People’s House,” Michelle Obama stated (via Billboard magazine).
Dyer will begin her duties as the White House social secretary on April 28th. President Barack Obama also shared his wife’s sentiments about Dyer’s work ethic. “Deesha shares our commitment to a White House that reflects America’s history, highlights our culture, and celebrates all Americans,” President Obama stated. He continued, “Michelle and I look forward to working with her in this new role as we welcome visitors from across the country and around the world to the People’s House.” Dyer is replacing Jeremy Bernard, who held the Social Secretary position for four years.
Before embarking on a career in government, Dyer was an assistant at the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust. Dyer was also a freelance journalist for the Philadelphia City Paper, where she covered East Coast hip-hop music. She earned her degree from the Community College of Philadelphia at the age of 29 years old. Dyer worked with young adults as a CARE advocacy volunteer, and she created an AIDS program geared towards educating young adults about the disease. In 2009, the 31-year old Dyer interned at the White House in the office of scheduling and advance. After just one year, she was promoted to a full-time position as associate director for scheduling correspondence. Dyer’s hard work and dedication earned her another promotion in 2013, and she became deputy social security at the White House. Dyer even traveled with President Obama and Mrs. Obama to handle lodging and logistics.
