English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released his second studio album, X, onto iTunes on June 18th, 2014, with a promotional single “Thinking Out Loud.” This single has proven to be a chart-topping romantic ballad about a couple growing old together, but loving each other as if it was still the first day they met. Resembling the majority of what we have heard from Ed Sheeran in the past, this song has a soft, acoustic sound with the main focus on the vocals. There are slight backing vocals that flow with the music and give the added effect of the sounds of a choir.
The song starts off with the lyrics, “When your legs don’t work like they used to before / And I can’t sweep you off of your feet / Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love? / Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?” Right from the get-go, Ed Sheeran throws listeners right into what he is thinking and feeling and goes straight to what the song is about.
The second verse is a large declaration of love, as it says, “And, darling, I will be loving you ’til we’re 70 / And, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23 / And I’m thinking ’bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways / Maybe just the touch of a hand /Well, me – I fall in love with you every single day,” Within this verse, we get a glimpse of what he is trying to say to his significant other. Specifically, we are told that he will love her until they are old, just as he did when he was young. The song then goes on to say that he falls in love with her everyday. What girl does not want to hear that? The chorus is another lovely way to say that he is in love with this girl, with “But, baby, now / Take me into your loving arms / Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars / Place your head on my beating heart / Thinking out loud / That maybe we found love right where we are.”
All in all, this is a charming romantic ballad that shows lasting love. From what we see from this single, we can only assume that Ed Sheeran is not going to be changing his sound at any time soon and that he will continue to win listeners over with his clever love songs. The whole album X is available on iTunes for download.
