When people hear the word “drugs” they typically think of dirty substances that were created in someone’s basement being sold and traded on dark street corners by shady characters. A lot of us never stop to realize that some of the most addictive chemicals of all are created and handed out by the medical industry, and are completely legal! It’s true. Here are six of the most addictive pharmaceutical drugs prescribed to people by trusted medical practitioners.

Number Six: Hydrocodone (Vicodin)

Hydrocodone, also known and distributed under the name codeine, is used for pain relief and also cough relief. This drug is sometimes available on its own, and other times is combined with Tylenol, aspirin, or ibuprofen. This combination increases the effectiveness of the drug. It’s so physically addictive that people must taper their dosage down slowly instead of stopping it all at once, which could be dangerous for the body.

Number Five: Oxycodone (OxyContin)

Oxycodone is also derived from the poppy plant and is an opiate. It is sometimes sold under the name OxyContin. This drug caused a huge epidemic in many parts of America not so long ago. Similar to the above-mentioned hydrocodone, it can be formulated with acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or other non-narcotic pain relief substances for effectiveness.

Number Four: Meperidine (Demerol)

Meperidine is also known as Demerol. This drug is a lot like opiates, but is different because it’s synthetic. It was created in a laboratory and not derived from something natural such as poppies.

Number Three: Methylphenidate (Ritalin)

This drug is also known as the ADHD drug, Ritalin. It increases focus, attention span, and performance in general by stimulating the central nervous system. Unfortunately, it works so well for these things that it’s quite addictive.

Number Two: Amphetamines (Adderall, etc)

Amphetamines are stimulants which are used for many different reasons. Amphetamines can be found in drugs like Dexedrine, Benzedrine, and a few others. Therapeutically, it is prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Disorders among other related issues.

Number One: One of the Most Physically Addictive Drugs, Diazepam (Valium)

This has a variety of uses, including help with panic attacks, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and stimulant overdoses. Some people like it a bit too much! Thanks for reading our list.
