The Killers‘ frontman, Brandon Flowers, debuted the first single off his upcoming sophomore album last night. The song, “Can’t Deny My Love,” premiered in the U.K on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show and is one of ten tracks to make it on the album, which was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid. He then went on to perform the single on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. With the Killers on hiatus, Flowers, whose aspirations used to be to follow in his uncles’ footsteps and be a valet parker, will be promoting The Desired Effect, with six European tour dates. The tour kicks off in Dublin on May 19th, which also happens to be the album’s U.S. release date, and runs through May 28th; hitting London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds, and Birmingham.

In making The Desired Effect, which Flowers has said is only barely influenced by his hometown of Las Vegas, the Grammy award-winning producer forced Flowers to work outside of his comfort zone. “Normally I make demos and they’re pretty similar to how the song ends up but he’ll take a song and be like, ‘I hear this.’ It’s incredible – his palette and his range, what he’s able to say. At first we were butting our heads together, but now we’re hitting it off.” Rechtshaid, who has worked with HAIM, Usher, and Charli XCX among others, pushed Flowers so hard that he thought about firing him several times, saying “I’m telling you it was tough. I wanted to fire him. Four times. He knows.”

As for Flowers’ expectations for his follow-up to 2010’s Flamingo, he says, “I want to be on the radio. I’ve never been ashamed to say that. I can’t believe where radio has gone. It seems to be such a weird world now. Where once I seemed to fit in, now I’m seen as a little different. I used to be considered mainstream, but now I’m almost avant-garde or art rock compared to what’s on the radio.”

Flowers has been named as one of Sir Elton John‘s top five heroes, and with his band, The Killers has earned seven Grammy nominations. The band has sold over twenty-five million albums and have four consecutive chart-topping albums.

FDRMX Eyes: Ottawa is a rock band from Cleveland, Ohio. “Fever” was filmed at the Bad Racket Recording Studio.
