There must be something in the water down under, because we’ve seen wave after wave of talented new artists emerging from Australia lately. Jakubi is an Aussie-bred 5-piece band that has the ability to create infectious ‘pop-spinned’ r&b jams. They’ve set their sights on the U.S. for their first tour, and released their very first music video, ‘Couch Potato’ three days ago to preview their upcoming EP, Can’t Afford It All.
‘Couch Potato’ blends electronic soul with bright visuals for their first video, indicative of their sunny subversive-funk sound. The idea of the video is simple enough. A lazy, beautiful girl lounging on a couch floats through a sunny neighborhood, eventually attracting enough attention from bystanders to spur an impromtu following/street party. It’s easy enough to compare Jakubi to acts like Bruno Mars or the Miami-based Robby Hunter Band, but an edge of soul-funk and R&B, along with distinctive vocals and clean guitar riffs put them in a different category altogether. It’s also worth noting that Jakubi managed to raise enough money for a U.S. on their own, thanks to an explosion in online popularity and a kickstarter funding campaign. Each of their tracks on soundcloud have almost over a quarter-million streams each (not including a Kygo remix that’s reached over 2 million streams), and the band is arguably more popular in the States than in Australia. Its an impressive feat for a new band, especially considering Jakubi did it with no major label backing and haven’t even released their first record yet. Member Robert Amoruso says “online love has been so important through all this” and comments on the U.S. tour, admitting “we understand how rare opportunities like this are. I guess we didn’t want to sit on it for to long and risk missing the boat.”
The band has 5 members: Jerome (vocals/keys/talk box), Robert (guitar/keys/drums), Jesse (drums/guitar), Addam (guitar/keys), and Jacob (bass/moog). Easily the most popular song they’ve made so far, the single Can’t Afford It All is a favorite off of their forthcoming EP. Even if you typically shy away from pop music, the soul-infused, electronic beat is undeniably catchy and you’ll be blasting from your car windows before the summer is over.
