Long-time frontman of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin has decided to abandon ship once again. He has hopped aboard a new one featuring a new manager, a new label, and a new moniker. The piano-playing, soul-singing artist will now be releasing music under his real name Andrew McMahon. He was interviewed by Billboard as he gave the exclusive first listen of his new album, entitled, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

“There were a lot of signs in the making of the last Jack’s record that told me it was time to move on,” McMahon said. “On both of the albums after 2005’s Everything In Transit (2008’s The Glass Passenger and 2011’s People and Things), I was very caught up in my illness and recovery,” he explained, referencing his triumph over cancer in his early twenties. ”It made the two things hard to unwind from one another.”

The artist literally ventured off into the wilderness driving to a cabin in Topanga Canyon, California during the week to create these songs, and came home on the weekends to be with his then-pregnant wife Kelly. This album is very much about his personal experiences, much like the material for Jack’s Mannequin. However, this album is not quite as self indulged as his previous releases have been. There actually are songs about other people. “Cecilia and the Satellite” is all about his new daughter, and “Canyon Moon” is about a fictitious girl escaping the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. “It’s not necessarily my story but I think there were a lot of elements of the canyon in the song — and my own love/hate history with Los Angeles,” he said.

McMahon will set off on a North American tour to promote the new album, starting Oct. 14, 2014 and running though Nov. 29, 2014. “The shows now are such a trip. There’s people who I’ve been seeing at gigs since I was 18 years old,” he said. “Now they are married, have kids, and have these lives, some of which are similar to mine. Meeting people after shows, you have this feeling of, ‘We grew up together.'”

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness is set for an Oct. 14 release date. Pre-sale for the album and packages are available here. You can check out the stream here.
