Aaliyah was one of the most well-liked and highly regarded artists of her time. Though she may be gone from this earth, it will be a long time before the singer and performer is forgotten. However, despite the fact that Aaliyah spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of 15 things you probably didn’t know about Aaliyah. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: She Sang for the Homeless. Aaliyah’s father ran a homeless shelter, and when she was a child she would sometimes go to the shelter and sing for the people there.

Number Fourteen: She Began Voice Lessons Before Beginning School. Aaliyah’s mom must have known that she had some serious talent because she enrolled her daughter in voice lessons before she enrolled her in school!

Number Thirteen: She Auditioned for Family MattersIt’s true! In 1989, she decided to audition for a role on the show. Just imagine her next to Urkel!

Number Twelve: She Lost Star SearchA young Aaliyah appeared on the show in 1989. She sang “My Funny Valentine” in an inspiring performance; however, she ended up losing and even cried as a result of her loss.

Number Eleven: She Was Related to Gladys Knight. Aaliyah’s uncle was Barry Hankerson, and he ended up marrying the popular singer. So not only was her aunt super famous, but the two actually performed together in Vegas! Aaliyah was only 11 at the time, and the two performed for five nights at Bally’s.

Number Ten: She Had a Bodyguard in High School. The singer attended high school in Detroit and had gained quite a bit of fame before she graduated. Because of her celebrity status, she opted to have a full-time bodyguard with her while she was still in high school.
