Australian pop-punk group 5 Seconds of Summer released their single “She’s Kinda Hot” last year, and it soared to the top of the charts. In the first few hours of its release, “She’s Kinda Hot” has reached #1 on the US, UK, and Australian iTunes charts. 5 Seconds of Summer members Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin made a YouTube video announcing their single, and ever since then, fans have been anxious to hear the track. In the announcement video, Michael Clifford states, “It really sets the direction for the next album,” and as soon as I heard this, I was extremely curious to hear the song myself. Would the group depart from their traditional pop sound and head in a more punk rock direction? The answer is yes, but don’t fret because this track sounds just as great as any other 5 Seconds of Summer song you’ve ever heard.
“She’s Kinda Hot” storms out of the gate with lead singer Luke Hemmings singing “My girlfriend’s b****in ’cause I always sleep in.” I was instantly surprised by the lyrics, as well as the quirky rhythm being plucked on an acoustic guitar in the background. Hemmings and Hood lead the vocals in the verses and sing lyrics such as “My shrink is telling me I’ve got crazy dreams / She’s also saying I’ve got low self-esteem / She’s kinda hot though” and “My friend left college cause it felt like a job / His mum and dad both think he’s a slob / He’s got a shot though.”
While the instrumental of the song starts out quite mellow and slow, fear not, it soon picks up the pace tenfold. Powerful electric guitars radiate throughout the chorus, and drummer Ashton Irwin pounds on his kit with extreme passion. Surprisingly, lead guitarist Michael Clifford’s voice leads the anthemic chorus of this track, and he shouts, “They say we’re losers but we’re all alright with that / We are the leaders of the ‘not coming backs’ / But we’re alright though / Yeah, we’re alright though / We are the kings and the queens of the new broken scene / But, we’re alright though.” Clifford also has an incredible guitar solo in the bridge of this track where he epically shreds like a pro.
This song features a wide variety of instruments ranging from acoustic and electric guitars to a xylophone and a banjo, so upon first listen, I wasn’t sure if I was a huge fan of the song’s quirky sound. However, after a few plays, I can definitely say that this track has me hooked. The melody is extremely catchy and will instantly get stuck in your head as soon as you listen to the track for the first time. “She’s Kinda Hot” definitely signifies a slight change in sound for 5 Seconds of Summer, but nothing that their current fans will not enjoy.
